The Unfair Manifesto

I write this from a Lagos server room. 18 degrees Celsius. Controlled humidity. 65 decibels of cooling fans. My sanctuary. Outside? Software engineering has gone insane.

We were sold a lie. The lie says software is "expression." An "art form." That "developer experience" matters most. Software is not art. Software is engineering. Engineering is governed by physics.

Forget the Medium article. Three laws of physics matter.

1. Latency is Distance.

Speed of light is constant. Fiber optics are glass. You cannot npm install physics. Yet you load 5MB of JavaScript to render a button. You fight physics. You lose.

2. Bandwidth is Finite.

The pipe has a width. Ship a 15MB hero video? You shove a watermelon through a straw. The user sees a spinner. They hate you.

3. Compute is Energy.

Code parsing takes electricity. Re-render the DOM on every keystroke? You steal electricity. You heat their phone. You drain their battery.

We live in the Era of Slop. Electron apps take 2GB RAM for a chat window. "Fairness" is for kindergarten. Engineering is war.

Competitors are lazy. They follow the herd. They use slow tools, make slow decisions, ship slow products. This is your opportunity. This is the Unfair Advantage.

I consulted for a fintech. They spent $50,000/month on AWS RDS. Database crawling. Three "Big Data Architects" hired. I checked the Postgres config.

1. Default to Zero. Start with HTML. JavaScript only when necessary.
2. Build for the Worst. Test on a $100 Android on Slow 3G.
3. Own the Stack. No "magic" BaaS unless we know the cost.
4. Respect User Hardware. We do not occupy user RAM without reason.

You claim "Full Stack." But you panic at a Linux terminal. You don't know a C-header. You think DNS is magic.

You are not Full Stack. You are "Full Framework." useEffect is not a spell; it is a scheduling request. Vercel is AWS Lambda with a markup. To be Unfair, look under the hood. Understand the machinery.

"Good enough" means: "It works for me, and I lack empathy."

The Latency Spiral:
Amazon: 100ms latency = 1% sales drop. Google: 0.5s delay = 20% traffic drop.

Add that 500KB library for "cleaner code"? You trade your convenience for user experience. Not engineering. Narcissism.

Pendulum swing. Return to basics. Rust, Go, Zig. Bun. We bloated the web. Physics pushed back.

To be Unfair in 2026, ride this wave. Comfortable with metal. Memory management. Concurrency. Syscalls. Be the mechanic. Not just the driver.
